Ask Yourself These
Critical Life Questions

Before we can discover and begin to live fully from our authentic selves, we must "live the questions." By thoroughly exploring key life questions, we begin to understand who we are, where we've come from, what makes us who we are, and how we can make a difference. While it can seem a tedious process to invest our time in such inner searching, I encourage you to take your time with this process and to revisit these questions as you continue to shed who you are not and embrace the authentic you.

You are your own raw material.
When you know what you consist of and what you want
to make of it, then you can invent yourself.

Warren Bennis

Sometimes it seems all we have are questions about life. If you're anything like me, there have surely been times when you have wanted to throw up your hands and scream, "I'm sick of the questions. Give me answers. Now!" What I've learned is this: the longer I patiently sit with life questions and allow them to work on me, the richer the days of my life. So, I invite you to live the questions.

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart
and try to love the questions themselves.
Rainer Maria Rilke

Who am I?
What makes me who I am? Visit our Life Purpose page for more.

Why am I here? What is my calling?
It's always interesting to me that this question rises up from within us. Why are we here? Why are we, humans, here, on this planet in this time? This question, along with the first, calls us to wake up and remember (reconstruct) the truth of our very existence. Where did we come from? Where are we going? What is our purpose here and now? Visit our Life Purpose page for more.

What creates energy for me? What's my passion?

What fuels my passion and brings me alive? When or in which circumstances do I feel most connected with my authentic self? V
isit our Life Energy page for more.

What values do I hold dear? What do I stand for?
What causes, principles, or values do I wholeheartedly embrace? Who, individually or groups of individuals, do I wish to support, honor and uplift? Am I currently living from my true values?

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of the mystery every day.
Albert Einstein

What are my gifts, talents, and skills?
What gifts are associated with my personality and central to who I am? What talents am I known for? What skills have I developed? How might these gifts, talents, and skills best serve me in my quest to create my life today?

Having trouble identifying your talents? Try this: fill a page with a list of "Things I Love to Do." Don't limit yourself to what you spend your time doing or the obvious skills you've acquired. Think about what you love. Look for hidden gifts which don't necessarily seem to reflect how you choose to invest your time now. Try taking aptitude tests or gift inventories to discover more possibilities.

What does my ideal day look like?
How does it begin? And end? What happens in between? Where are you? What are you doing, thinking, and feeling? Who is around you? What do you see, hear, touch, taste, smell? How are you operating or being that is different from your everyday actions now? You must live the life you want to live.

What is my vision for my life?
What will my life look like one year from today? What will it look like five or ten years from today? Am I focused on my vision for my life every day? Are my actions and my goals in perfect alignment with my desire for my life?

Where do I belong?
Which groups of people do I feel a natural affinity for? Where do I feel most at ease and comfortable with who I am? Where do I feel most needed? In what places do I settle into my true self?

Who are my role models?
Who in your life to date exemplifies most the qualities you most want to emulate? Who has paved the way for you? Who has taught you life's most valuable lessons? (Note: keep in mind that some of our teachers and role models may not be people in our everyday lives. They may, in fact, have lives very different from our own and move in circles far removed from our everyday lives.)

Who has been instrumental in shaping my life?
What people have helped mold my character? Who has supported me, loved me, honored me, corrected me, directed me? Who were the people "behind the scenes" in my life, without whom I would not be who I am today?

What is my deepest longing?
What life legacy do I wish to leave behind?
What stirs my soul? What matters most? What am I missing in my life? Who is waiting for me? How do I wish to be remembered?

How can I make a difference?
What can I do that is the best use of who I am and what gifts and talents I've been given and meets a need in the world today? Where do my gifts meet the world's deep need? Visit our Making a Difference page for more.

Don’t ask what the world needs.
Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
Howard Thurman
